Lent Sermon Hymn #430 Mid. Week 6

“My song is Love Unknown”

Written by Samuel Crossman in the year of 1625- 84)

Tune by John Ireland 1879 – 1962

The 17th century in England was a Golden age of a Christian poetry. From the intensely personal metaphysical verse of John Donne to the epic biblical  retellings of john Milton these poems were intense as hymns. Though some were set to music. in the  19 and 20 centuries.

My song is love unknown. With its haunting melody by the 20th century composer. John Ireland has as its text a poem by the Anglican clergyman Samuel Crossman(1625-84) who in turn drew on the work of arguably the greatest devotional  poet in English literature, George Herbert (1593-1632)  The Poem Beginning  “my Song is love Unknown”  was first published in 1664 in a collection of Crossman’s Poems titled  the Young mans Meditation An epigraph on the title page is a quotation credited to “ Mr. Herbert’s Temple.”  Which is from the First stanza of Herbert’s opening poem, “ The Church-Porch,”

In “My song is Love Unknown”  by far the best poem in the collections, Crossman begins with an allusion to Herbert’s poem “Love Unknown”  as a symbolic exploration of the mysteries of God’s Love in the midst of human suffering, The poem as a whole, however, I related to Herbert’s meditation  on the Passion of Christ, “ The Sacrifice”  this Poem was written from the point of view of Christ Himself between human sin and Christ’s Love.

Stanza 1   My song is love unknown, My Savior’s love to me,   Love to the loveless shown That they might lovely be. Oh, who am I That for my sake My Lord should take Frail flesh and die?

The Immeasurable love of God it is unconditional, He Loves us so much that He gave His Only Begotten Son, to became flesh and Die in the Cross for all Human Kind, and Certainly the love of God  is unknow for all humanity, we cannot measure the love of God, our sinful condition as a human being is always to unknown the love of God for all His Creatures, we only rejected the love of God and we cannot Love Him, we are separated from the love of God and the wrath of God is on those who has rejected the Love of Him, because our nature don’t’ let us see how much God Loves us, we continually rejected the gifts and blessings that God had for us,

The word “LOVE” Has a different meaning for us but the only one a true Love is from God, we know the Word Love in this meaning “STORGE” which is an Empathy Bond, “PHILIA OR PHILOS” Friend Bond. “EROS” Romantic Love and the most Beautiful Love and only one Person can do this Love is God our Father in His Son Jesus Christ who it is Given for us “AGAPE”  UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, This unconditional Love has being given since the first day of the creation, by God to His Creatures, the sinfulness came to the world and to all human kind and that relation was broken, but God the Father has a Plan for us to have a new relation with Him again his agape Love for us that He have, was to Send a Savior to the World His Son Jesus Christ. My Savior’s love to me,   Love to the loveless shown That they might lovely be. Oh, who am I That for my sake My Lord should take Frail flesh and die?

That immeasurable love the Agape Love of God is in His Son Jesus Christ god Himself became a flesh for all human kind and die in the Cross for all of us Sinners, He came to love the loveless sinners and to fulfill what we cannot fulfill the Law of God the Father, His Flesh became to our Flesh and His Dead and Resurrection Now Became our Dead and Resurrection only By Faith in His Only Begotten Son, My Lord and My Savior Our Savior take Frail Flesh and Die, what a wonderful Agape Love to all of Us.

Stanza 2  He came from his blest throne Salvation to bestow; But men made strange, and none The longed-for Christ would know. But, oh my friend, My friend indeed, Who at my need His life did spend!

By the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, He leave His throne and all His Glory to come and save all mankind.

Philiphians 2 6 said  who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,[b] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,[c] being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

but a Man did not recognize Him as the Son of God, the Savior of the World, the promised Messiah, who would come to save all mankind, rejected Him and denied Him by surrendering Him to His condemnation and Death on the Cross. Jesus Christ was Obedient  and Humble Himself  for all of Us, and give His Life for all of us, that Great Friend, Tells  us now we are His Friends by the immense Grace of God the Eternal Father, who Has given His Only Son to Death because of Our sins, thanks to that Sacrifice on the Cross to His Death and His Resurrection We can call Him friend, God has given us a Commandment through his Son Jesus Christ.

John 15-12 said

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

What a wonderful Love for us His Creation the Agape Love Bestow in Us His Childrens who at my need His Life did Spend.

Stanza 3 Sometimes they strew his way And his sweet praises sing; Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” Is all their breath, And for his death They thirst and cry.

Our human nature is sinful we always seek to have our own comforts, and look for what we need at first instance, we are selfish people and as long as we have the benefit to ourselves, we don’t  care about other people, always our sinful nature tends to do evil in the eyes of God , when it is given the benefits of God's Blessings, we shout and sing Hosannas to Our King, it is like many people who followed Jesus only because of the Miracles that He Perform Towards some people, and they wanted to receive a Favor in return, our Sinful Nature Makes to be  followers of favors and benefits given by  Jesus, instead to  followed Jesus for who He was and continues to be, the Son of the Living God ,  only by His Mercy and Grace have we been able to have of Him, eternal Life, what kind of Person are you? Are you just a follower of Jesus for receiving benefits instantly, just by receiving a miracle like many of his followers, at that time? Or  you are really a disciple of Christ, who is willing to carry your Own Cross, deny yourself for the Love of your neighbor, as Christ Jesus has done  for all of Us, or you are one more of the multitude that after having shouted and sung Hosannas to the King, you yell at him Crucifying Him,  that is rather Our Tendency to Deny all the Benefits of God that he has given us through His Son Jesus in death and the Resurrection, He has given us all that He had and still gives us every day all his blessings through the means of the sacraments, the Word, Baptism and the Holy Supper, thus giving us all his Blessings and Unconditional Love to his believers, is an undeserved gift but for His love and Mercy he has given to us totally free without asking for anything in return , it is only through faith in the Son of Man that he has given this gifts of eternal life and salvation for all mankind, so let us shout Hosannas with Joy and singing Praises to the King of Kings to Our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ  to His Honor and Glory.

Stanza 4 Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, He gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these Themselves displease And ‘gainst him rise.

Our Lord Jesus Christ Perform so Many Miracles to the people, He made the lame Run, the Blind their Sight, and the most important thing of those miracles He Forgive the sins of all people who has been  trust in Him by Faith, He has given His Word and His Life for Our Life God the Father, now is seeing in us at His Son Jesus Christ, He Doesn’t see any more the sinful person we are, by Faith in His Son, we are being forgiven the Wrath of God is no longer in us, Jesus Christ had being paid the price for all our transgressions. and instead of that we condemn Him again, we are ungrateful people we tend to forget what Has been done for all of us, His love and Mercy upon all of us, we don’t understand his Love, what did Jesus do to deserve this treatment?  He mercifully healed human diseases and affliction, and only Jesus received the Hatred to the Human Beings in return, they respond to Jesus goodness with “rage and spite”

Stanza 5  They rise and needs will have My dear Lord made away; A murderer they save, The prince of life they slay. Yet cheerful he To suff’ring goes That he his foes From thence might free.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ made our Necessities go away,  we were slaves of  eternal death, and He rescue us and set us free for that damnation, without Christ all our lives are condemn to Hell, he is the only one who provides us everything in our lives, He is the one who allows to live and open our eyes every morning, He is the one who take cares all our needs in life, house, food, Clothes, Health, etc.. but the most important thing the necessity of a savior, He Provide His Only Begotten Son to Rescue us, Our sinful condition, people ask to deliver and  rescue a murder Barabbas instead to Jesus, but even tough God Our Father has that Plan to happened, for the sake of all of us to rescue us from the slavery of eternal dead in Hell, Jesus Christ Himself gladly goes to Suffering His Dead on The Cross for all people eve the enemies the one who condemn Him to dead all of us we are the ones who cry aloud Crucifying, and Him without any word from His Mouth, willingly took our Place and set us Free, Now His dead and resurrection is ours, the suff’ring   goes that he his foes from thence might free. The prince of Life  The Love Unknown of Christ is at The Cross, so let us rejoice and sing aloud Hosannas to the Lord with a Thankful Heart and shouts of Glory to the Lord.

Stanza 6   In life no house, no home My Lord on earth might have;In death no friendly tomb But what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav’n was his home But mine the tomb Wherein he hay

Jesus Himself tells his followers and even his disciples in Luke 9-58 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

Certainly Jesus tells his followers that he has no where to lay his head on earth, has no home, that he offer, in other  words an Earthly Inheritance or riches to offer for those who are willing to follow him. All those who expect an inheritance or riches here on earth, and work to receive something in earth, are very wrong, many followers want to receive earthly riches and favors, but what they do not understand, is that He has already given us the greatest inheritance we can have and this, is eternal life in Heaven , that greater treasure we can yearn, there is no earthly wealth that can be compared to the inheritance of eternal life, He said to His Disciples before to Willingly go to the Cross

John 14- 1

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Christ Became incarnate and died not only for the human race but for my sake our sake,  Christ died my dead and was buried in my tomb as my substitute and resurrected for all of us,  what a wonderful Gift what a great inheritance we have in Him, now we can lay in His Arms and rest on Him “let us sing out loud the song of Love unknown” that Christ our Savior Bestow in Us in Grace and Mercy for His Glory.

Stanza 7 Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine! Never was love, dear King, Never was grief like thine. This is my friend, In whose sweet praise I all my days Could gladly spend

Let us Rejoice and Sing Praises to The Lord Our God, for salvation He has Made in His Son Jesus Christ, let us Sing Hosannas to the Lord, what a beautiful story of the King of Kings the Savior of the World, the only one a True King, Jesus Christ,  it is no other name in earth and above given to the world, with who everyone bend our knees to the  Lord, Salvation is Here now Rejoice because this Jesus is now  Our Friend He gave His life for all His Friends what a Beautiful Love the Agape Love He had for all His Friends, This is My Friend Jesus Christ, in whose sweet praise, I all my days Could gladly spend. To God be all The Honor and Glory in Jesus Christ Our Lord  Amen !!

May the peace of God who Trespasses all understanding keep your hart and Mind for life everlasting Amen!!
