Sermon:#458 “Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands”

April 4-2021 Easter Morning

Text : Martin Luther

Translation: Richard Massie

Tune  Geysliche gesangk  Buchleyn, wittengberg, 1524.

Text background: this hymn is an expansion by Martin Luther (1483- 1546) of “Christ is arisen” (hymn 459) see that him and Christians, to the Paschal victim (hymn 460) for the historical background to “Christ Jesus lay in that Strong’s bands”

the hymn begins with echoing the words of St. Luke “God raise him up, loosing the pangs of death, because he was not possible for him to be held by it” (acts 2:24) Christ resurrection brings us life and salvation:” he will shallow up death forever”(Isaiah 25:8) in faith, the Christian joyfully praises the Lord.

Stanza 1: Christ Jesus lay in death’s strong bands For our offenses given; But now at God’s right hand he stands And brings us life from heaven. Therefore let us joyful be And sing to God right thankfully Loud songs of alleluia! Alleluia!

!HE IS RISEN!

Jesus Christ was sent by  God the Father, his only begotten son came to earth in flesh  giving up all his glory in heaven for the love of all humankind. To fulfill what we cannot fulfill, he lived perfectly without sin for all of us, he became a sinner and give his life in the cross, for all our transgression, and died on the cross for all, but also in the third day he resurrected, and his death and resurrection is now our  death and resurrection, and he is seated on the right hand of the father interceding for all of us, his life now is our life, by faith in him alone, so let us joy and sing to God the father in Thanksgiving and singing praises to the Lord and alleluias.

Stanza 2 No son of man could conquer death, Such ruin sin had wrought us. No innocence was found on earth, And therefore death had brought us Into bondage from of old
And ever grew more strong and bold And held us as its captive. Alleluia!

Because of the disobedience of the man sin and death came on the human flesh, such ruin sin had brought us, Eternal death and damnation. No one in the earth was found innocent to save their life, we were all captive in the chains of eternal death,  Romans chapter 5 said  Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—

the wrath of God was in all his creation, people were separated from God because of our transgressions.

Stanza 3 :  Christ Jesus, God's own Son, came down, His people to deliver; Destroying sin, He took the crown From death's pale brow forever: Stripped of pow'r, no more it reigns; An empty form alone remains; Its sting is lost forever. Alleluia!

Rejoice my beloved brothers, God the father for the love of all His creatures, send his beloved son to die for us and take away our sin, he descended from heaven, and take away his crown of glory, and took all our sin and humbling himself, took the crown of thorns in his head, dying on the cross shedding his blood to deliver us of eternal death and damnation, 1 Corinthians chapter 15 Said

50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”[h]

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”[
i]

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Sing Out Lod alleluia because ! HE IS RISEN!

Stanza 4:  It was a strange and dreadful strife When life and death contended; The victory remained with life, The reign of death was ended. Holy Scripture plainly saith That death is swallowed up by death,
Its sting is lost forever. Alleluia!

It was a terrible battle, he gave his life in the cross dying for all of us, He took our place for our transgressions, He deliver us, and now we can join eternal life in heaven, He was fighting the battle In the Cross defeating eternal death and condemnation in Hell. He Conquer the Victory of eternal Life on Heaven. The evil one has no power over us, eternal death is no longer any more for those who has believed in Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior.

as it is written in the apostles Creed in the second article, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On third day he rose again and ascended into heaven. And is seated at the right hand of the father. And he will come again to judge the living and the dead. He was descending to the hell, to announce his victory. And defeating eternal death and condemnation, rejoice, his death and resurrection is now ours, his victory is our victory, and one day when the Lord calls us into his presence we can rejoice in sing praises of hallelujahs to the Lord.

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”[
i]

Stanza 6: So let us keep the festival To which the Lord invites us; Christ is Himself the joy of all, The sun that warms and lights us. Now His grace to us imparts Eternal sunshine to our hearts; The night of sin is ended. Alleluia!

Stanza 7: Then let us feast this Easter Day On Christ, the bread of heaven; The Word of grace has purged away The old and evil leaven. Christ alone our souls will feed; He is our meat and drink indeed; Faith lives upon no other! Alleluia!
